OBITUARY
DR HU HUNG-LICK GBM, GBS, OBE, JP (胡鴻烈博士), beloved father of Drs Hu Yao-su and Hu Fai-chung, and founding president of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), passed away peacefully at the age of 105 on July 27, 2025, in St. Paul's Hospital with his family by his side.
Dr Hu’s selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to HKSYU and the advancement of higher education in Hong Kong set a remarkable standard. His lifelong efforts in promoting Chinese culture and contributing to the social progress of Hong Kong have left a profound and lasting impact on the community. Our staff, students, and alumni take great pride in being part of the institution that he and his late wife, Dr Chung Chi-yung, founded and led for so many years. It is an honour for us to carry forward their vision and legacy in the field of higher education.
The vigil will be held at Hong Kong Funeral Home, 679 King’s Road, North Point, Hong Kong from 5 to 9 pm on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, after which the burial will take place at Hong Kong Cemetery, where he will be buried alongside his late wife, Dr Chung Chi-yung.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

Memorial Service – “In Loving Memory of Dr Hu Hung-lick”
Our beloved Dr Hu Hung-lick, founding president of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) passed away peacefully, at the age of 105, on July 27, 2025 in St. Paul's Hospital with his family by his side.
A memorial service – “In Loving Memory of Dr Hu Hung-lick” will be held to celebrate Dr Hu’s remarkable life and achievements at the Lady Lily Shaw Hall, HKSYU campus, Braemar Hill, North Point, on 30 August 2025 (Saturday), at 2:30 p.m. Members of public are also welcome to participate and pay tributes.
The family respectfully requests no floral tributes for this occasion.
Reminder:
Space at the memorial service is limited and seats will be available on a first come first served basis. Admission tickets will be distributed at the entrance of Lady Lily Shaw Hall from 12:00 noon on the day of the service.
No parking will be available on campus on 30 August. Please kindly use public transportation.
