Dr. James WONG graduated from Shue Yan’s Department of Economics in 1992 and has been dedicated to public service. In 2026, he serves as Chairman of the Property Management Services Authority, Vice-Chairman of the Agency for Volunteer Service, and Deputy Commissioner (Development and Youth) of the Civil Aid Service. Dr. WONG returned to his alma mater to share career experiences with students and praised the University’s teaching as being like his family motto: “Suffering loss is a blessing.” He believes many people chase short-term fame and gain, but one should not focus only on the short term. “What we do to help others is actually helping ourselves — you may think you’re helping others, but you’re also improving yourself, and in the long run you will see long-term benefits,” he said. He added that social recognition, personal achievement, and others’ praise come from selfless, long-term giving. “Chinese tradition is very wise; the ways of people and the world are a study unto themselves. Actually, everyone has an aura — when you carry a field of positive energy, you attract other fields, which advances your personal career and contributions to society; everything progresses together.”
